Rui (Ray) Hu is a physical therapist, founder, and co-owner of Collective Therapy. He's practiced for over 12 years across a diverse population ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, and gaining experience through the entire spectrum of settings, from acute care to outpatient. He is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy.
His interest in rehabilitation began in college, where he initially considered pursuing a degree in computer science. During his freshman year, however, his sedentary lifestyle became an active one. Rather than gaining the infamous “Freshman 15” from overeating, he lost 50lbs through a combination of strength training, diet, and various forms of aerobic exercise. His physical recomposition sparked an interest in human physiology, which he pursued avidly. A year before graduation, his wonder for how he could use his newfound knowledge to help others led him to pursue a graduate degree and practice as a physical therapist.
Within a few years, Rui began to understand the detriments of rigid, revenue-based practice settings which valued profits above patient care. The demand for constantly increasing the volume of patient load while decreasing time for critical thinking could lead to faulty clinical decision-making, resulting in slow patient progress while inflating visit counts and cost of care. These glaring, widespread issues are the reason why Rui co-founded the Collective Therapy Corporation.
Rui spends most of his time outside of work with his wife, raising their 4-year-old daughter and completing various home improvement projects. He continues his training routine with a combination of barbell, bodyweight, and circuit-training.
"Collective Therapy is a practice where the well-being and quality of life for patients and staff are the highest priority. I hope we can disrupt the traditional 'productivity & profitability' business model that is rampant throughout our field. We will strive to deliver the most effective and ethical care in a positive, sustainable business environment."
